Macpherson Struts of Peugeot RCZ
Down below, the RCZ might be sitting on a platform derived from the 308, but the similarities are very few. It is wider by 30mm, has a significantly lower centre of gravity and wider front and rear tracks (44mm and 63mm wider). It is also has increased chassis rigidity and, at the wheel, it feels like a vault. Up front is a MacPherson strut suspension with a drop link anti-roll bar; rear suspension is semi-independent with a deformable cross member and anti-roll bar.The Peugeot RCZ benefit fundamentally from a highly efficient suspension set up developed from the marquee’s other platform 2 vehicle (Macpherson type front suspension and rear torsion beam). In addition, the car right height and center of gravity have been lowered by 20mm and 40 mm respectively compared to a 308 Hatchback. Furthermore compared to the latter, the Peugeot RCZ is wider front and rear track(+54mm and +72mm).the suspension and damper have been adapted accordingly and, with the addition of wider tyres(18" ou 19"),the end result is road holding of the very highest order.Lastly, when the Peugeot RCZ is equipped with the THP 147 kW(200 bhp) engine, front axel incorporates a special lower anti-roll bar make the car even more responsive and agile, while at the same time guaranteeing remarkable efficiency.
The most unique feature of a MacPherson strut suspension is that all of the components are contained in a single assembly. Based on a triangle design, a typical MacPherson strut assembly includes a coil spring, upper suspension locator, and shock absorber and is mounted between the top arm of the steering knuckle and the inner fender panel. When the spring is not on the strut itself, but is instead located between the lower control arm and the frame, this is known as a Chapman strut and a modified MacPherson suspension.
The strut
Is the heart of the Macpherson suspension system. Not only do strut look like conventional shock absorber, they also perform same shock damping function. They reduce suspension space and weights are requirement as well, mounting the strut assembly to the strering knuckle, they need for an upper control arm and ball joint is eliminated. The upper mounted is the load carrying component of Macpherson suspension.
Coil Spring
A mounting plate welded to the strut acts as the lower spring seat, while the upper seat is bolted to the strut piston rod. The coil spring and strut turn with the motion of the steering wheel by means of the bearing or rubber bushing in the upper mount. As mentioned earlier, modified Macpherson suspension do not have the coil spring mounted on the strut. While this feature does provide a smoother ride under normal driving condition, the regular Macpherson suspension (in which the spring is position on the strut) provides a smoother, more responsive ride over the wide range of driving condition. The higher and wider spring placement also provides superior resistance.
System operation
Originally created for use on all four wheels, Macpherson struts are actually a front end suspension part that uses both a steering pivot system and a suspension mounting for the wheel. The strong upper mounting houses a spring and cartridge that provides shock absorption. The lower arm is the steering arm. This suspension assembly reduces the need for additional parts and is light-weight and cost effective.
Benefit of MacPherson Strut:
The Macpherson strut is the of the two suspension design and such a s, there are fewer things that can go wrong with the strut type suspension. Also Macpherson strut takes up a little less room horizontally which allow former room for the front drive axle to past through the front and its allow the for more passenger compartment space. Relatively inexpensive compare another suspension type. Design is reduce unsparing weight which not only reduce the total weight of car.
